In memoriam · 2024
Eduardo Gutierrez
Eduardo was the kind of brother who noticed. He noticed when you were quiet at dinner, when your car was making a sound, when someone in the room had nobody to talk to. Long before there was a foundation, there was a man who paid attention to people other people overlooked.
The diagnosis came as stage 4 renal carcinoma. There is no gentle way to write that sentence, and there was no gentle way to hear it. What followed were the months our family will never fully be able to describe to anyone who has not lived them: the scans, the treatment cycles, the waiting rooms with the same magazines, the drives home when nobody said anything at all.
And yet — Eduardo fought faithfully. Not quietly, not without fear, but faithfully. He prayed when it hurt. He asked about other people's days from a hospital bed. He kept his eyes on Jesus when his body was failing, and he made believers out of people who came to comfort him and left comforted instead.
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10
In the spring of 2024, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ called Eduardo to rest. He did not lose. He finished. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, and he kept the faith — and the name of this foundation is the sentence we say over his life.
What our family learned in those months is that suffering has a second layer nobody warns you about. There is the illness, and then there is everything around the illness: the gas money, the missed shifts, the rent that comes due anyway, the meals nobody has the strength to cook, the loneliness of a diagnosis that empties a calendar. Church folks brought casseroles and we wept over them. Small kindnesses were not small.
The Good Race Foundation exists so those kindnesses arrive on purpose, and arrive with the name of Jesus attached to them.
